Breaking News: Fans are somewhat creepy

I’ve always wondered how spoilers for TV shows like Survivor get out. I always assumed that production assistants and interns, the lowest people on the totem pole in television production, were the ones leaking spoilers, as they are usually fans. However, I was reading an excerpt from Henry Jenkins’s book “Convergence Culture”, specifically, his first chapter titled “Spoiling Survivor”.

Apparently, fans use freaking satellite imaging to watch each location and determine who’s still there and who’s been kicked off on any particular day.

I can understand scoping out film studios for a glimpse of an actor during a film shoot, hoping for anything that will hint at future plot points. But using satellite technology to spy on reality TV shows for spoilers is slightly creepy. But spoilers are what gives all those blogs and news sites visitors and hits, which in turn equals revenue. So I guess it makes sense.

I do hope these people aren’t illegally using secret military technology like Howard and Raj on The Big Bang Theory did to spy on the America’s Next Top Model house. That would be taking it just a little too far, I think.
